At the Waterhole

Spencer Hodge's first limited edition for the twenty-first century is a triumphant representation of the subject which he has made his own: the big cats of East Africa. Painted after a wonderful encounter in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, At the Waterhole is an evocative depiction of a lioness and her three cubs, although the group which Spencer Hodge observed and sketched consisted, in fact, of three mothers and ten cubs. The painting features three types of grass, some grazed, which becomes less green further away from the water, and the ground itself is deeply rutted by the feet and hooves of the countless animals which have visited the waterhole to drink.
